Clearaway Recycling: Lindner Jupiter Powers High-Volume RDF Production

Clearaway Recycling: Lindner Jupiter Powers High-Volume RDF Production

How Clearaway Recycling is using a Lindner Jupiter static shredder to process up to 60 tonnes of waste per hour

For waste management and recycling businesses, choosing the right industrial shredder can have a significant impact on throughput, efficiency, safety and future expansion.

For Clearaway Recycling, the requirement was clear: a robust, versatile and reliable static waste shredder capable of handling high volumes of material for Refuse Derived Fuel (RDF) production.

Working with Mach Tech, Clearaway selected the Lindner Jupiter as its primary shredder, and the machine is now processing significant volumes of waste as part of an operation handling approximately 1,800 tonnes of material every week.

Clearaway Recycling and RDF production

Clearaway Recycling predominantly produces Refuse Derived Fuel (RDF) for the export market, as well as supplying material to energy-from-waste and incineration facilities within the UK.

With large volumes of waste passing through the facility every week, reliable and consistent primary shredding is essential.

The company needed a shredder that could become an integral part of its existing operation while also supporting future growth.

According to Paul Whitehair of Clearaway Recycling:

“We predominantly make RDF for the export market and also for the internal incinerators within the UK. Roughly we do about 1,800 tonne a week, which also goes through the Lindner Jupiter.”

Choosing the right static shredder

When Clearaway began looking for a new industrial shredder, there were numerous machines and manufacturers available on the market.

It was also a significant decision for the business because Clearaway had never previously operated a static shredder.

After discussions with Mach Tech, the Lindner Jupiter stood out because of its versatility and suitability for Clearaway’s waste streams.

“There were a lot of shredders to choose from. We’d never had a static shredder before, and this is when we started talking to Colin at Mach Tech. We were quite impressed with the Jupiter. It was quite versatile to our operation, to what we wanted to do.”

Price was also considered as part of the procurement process, but the machine’s versatility ultimately helped make the decision.

“The price was about on par with everybody else, so it wasn’t too much of a hard decision because of the versatility of the machine. That’s why we chose it.”

Why versatility matters in waste shredding

Waste streams can vary considerably in composition, density and characteristics. For operators producing RDF, having a versatile industrial shredder capable of handling different materials can be an important part of maintaining production.

The Lindner Jupiter was selected by Clearaway specifically because it could provide the flexibility required by its operation while delivering the throughput needed for a high-volume waste processing environment.

Up to 60 tonnes per hour

Clearaway is using the Lindner Jupiter as a primary shredder, with throughput dependent on the waste stream being processed.

Paul reports production rates ranging from approximately 50-60 tonnes per hour.

“We’ve been doing about 50 and 60 tonnes an hour, all hands on the waste stream going in.”

For a business processing approximately 1,800 tonnes of material every week, this level of throughput is an important part of the overall operation.

Paul also highlights that the Jupiter is performing the role it was selected for:

“We are actually using it as a primary shredder, which is what it was sold as, and it’s doing a very good job of that.”

Static shredder designed around future expansion

Clearaway’s investment in the Lindner Jupiter was not simply about meeting its immediate processing requirements.

The company already has planning permission in place for a new building, with the facility being designed around the existing Lindner shredder.

The static configuration of the machine has also formed part of Clearaway’s approach to creating a safer and more efficient working environment.

“Lindner was put in place with this in mind. The building is being built around the Lindner, part of expansion for the company, making things safer.”

For waste processing facilities, the ability to incorporate a shredder into the wider site layout can be an important consideration when planning future capacity and infrastructure.

Mach Tech and First Grade installation

Clearaway worked with First Grade on the installation of the system, with Mach Tech working closely alongside them throughout the project.

A well-managed installation is critical when introducing major processing equipment into an operational waste facility.

According to Paul, the process went smoothly:

“We also worked with First Grade on the installation, and Mach Tech worked very closely with them. Not a problem with it going up. Everything went according to plan, which in the waste industry isn’t the norm.”

The successful installation allowed Clearaway to integrate the Lindner Jupiter into its operation without the complications that can sometimes accompany major equipment projects.

Ongoing parts and after-sales support

For a high-volume recycling and waste processing business, buying the machine is only part of the relationship.

Access to parts and technical support can be equally important once the equipment is operational.

Clearaway has been positive about the ongoing support received from Mach Tech.

“General backup from Mach Tech has been very good. Whenever we needed the parts, they were there. Pretty good turnaround.”

For Mach Tech, providing ongoing support is an important part of supplying Lindner industrial shredders to the UK waste and recycling sector.

Why Clearaway would choose Mach Tech again

Having worked with Mach Tech on the supply, installation and ongoing support of its Lindner Jupiter, Clearaway is already looking ahead to future projects.

When asked whether he would use Mach Tech again, Paul’s answer was straightforward:

“Yes, I’ll use Mach Tech again to install the machine.”

That ongoing relationship is particularly relevant as Clearaway continues with its expansion plans and develops its new facility around the Lindner Jupiter.

A Lindner Jupiter built for high-volume RDF processing

Clearaway Recycling’s investment demonstrates how the right industrial waste shredder can become a key part of a high-volume RDF production operation.

With approximately 1,800 tonnes of material processed each week and reported throughput of up to 60 tonnes per hour, the Lindner Jupiter is being used as a primary shredder within a demanding waste processing environment.

The machine’s versatility, static configuration and integration into Clearaway’s future facility plans have all contributed to its role within the operation.

For businesses considering a static shredder for RDF production, waste processing or recycling, the Clearaway project provides a real-world example of how a Lindner Jupiter can be incorporated into a high-throughput operation.
